cool programs that you
should
have
-
JAlbum
: a great and FREE web photo album maker. It's what's used to make the
eCaudill Photo Albums
- AdAware : must have anti-spyware
software
- SpyBot Search & Destroy :
the other must-have anti-spyware software
- AVG's Free Anti-Virus : a highly
rated, free anti-virus (and other features) program
- GIMP : a free, photo retouching
program with many of the features and PhotoShop.
- CardRecovery
: not free, but saved by behind when I accidentally erased all of the
pictures from my camera's SD card. It also saved my pictures
when
my PC wouldn't recognize the card (thinking it was corrupt).
Trust me, if you think you're going to lose some priceless
pictures, it's the best $40 you'll ever spend.
- OpenProj
: a free, Microsoft Project replacement. It reads Microsoft
Project files and is an overall nice program - all things considered.
- KeePass
Password Safe : a free password vault program.
There is a desktop/laptop version as well as a thumbdrive one.
- OpenOffice
: a very powerful, and free alternative to the Microsoft Office Suite.
It includes Writer (Word), Calc (Excel), Impress
(PowerPoint),
Base (Access), Draw (Visio), and Math (formula writer). I
actually uninstalled Microsoft Office on my desktop and installed this
instead without any issues. A suite to seriously consider.
- Picasa : Google's free photo
organizer - and so much more! Red-eye removal, image effects,
slideshow movies, photo albums, etc.
- Windows Photo Story
: a great program that takes digital pictures and music files and turns
them into slideshow movies... similar to Picasa, but a bit better.
- KompoZer
: a free, open-source HTML editor. Very simple and well
designed.
- Core FTP LE : a free, FTP client
to upload those webpages you've just written.
- PDFill : a very
nice, free suite of PDF manipulation tools including (but certainly not
limited to) merging, splitting, and reordering PDF files.
There
is also a 'printer' driver to enable creation of PDF from the print
menu.
- Foxit Reader : a very nice, and
feature-filled alternative to Adobe Acrobat Reader. What I
like best about it is how 'light' it is on system requirements as
opposed to the drag that Acrobat Reader puts on a computer.

- Know Your Brewer : A fantastic place to find information on North Carolina breweries and brew pubs.
- Carolina
Brewing Company
: Some of the best brew around... and made in Holly Springs.
- Big Boss Brewing Company : A local brewery that opened in 2006. They also have a very nice in-house tavern - drink up!
- Lonerider Brewing Company : A new (as of April 2009) brewery in Raleigh. Very tasty brews from what I've tried so far!
-
Tír na nÓg : Irish pub in downtown Raleigh. One of
the first bars that opened at the beginning of the downtown
revitalization back in the late '90's. Located here.
- The Flying Saucer : a chain bar
with ~80 beers on tap. I must also mention it's worth
visiting for the 'scenery'. Located here.
- The
Raleigh Times
: a fairly new bar in downtown Raleigh. For reasons I can't
explain, it has some sort of allure that makes you want to go there -
even with the way overpriced beers. Located here.
- Hibernian Pub
: A great pub in Glenwood South (one in Cary as well). Tall pints
and lots of room... one of the better striaght-up beer-drinking bars in
town. Located here.
satire
and
hilarity
- The Onion : one of, if not the,
best satire websites out there.
- Landover
Baptist Church :
guaranteeing salvation since 1612.
- SeanBaby : in a nutshell, a
collection of classic comic (mis)adventures - those odd Hostess comic
ads, The Super Friends, classic video game junk, great reader mail.
- Chickenhead : "Towering Pillar of
Intellectual Bankruptcy".
- Stuff White People Like : that pretty much sums it up.
